Engineering Society of UCLA


President

The president of ESUC officially represents the society to the School of Engineering, other engineering organizations, and to the UCLA student body as a whole. As president, he/she will be working to challenge him/herself and the rest of the officer team for the continued growth and success of the Engineering Society. It is recommended that only previous officers may run for president to ensure a smoother transitional period and effective leadership. The duties of the president include but are not limited to the following:
  • To conduct and set the agenda for general and officer meetings.
  • To collaborate with other engineering groups and remain updated in upcoming activities.
  • To serve as the bridge between the Dean, the Faculty, and the students.
  • To work closely with all officers to ensure the Engineering Society's continued operations.
  • To mentor younger officers in order to groom future leaders.
  • To act as a signatory to the Center for Student Programming.

Internal Vice President

The internal vice president of ESUC is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the society. In particular, it is the responsibility of the internal vice president to oversee the logistical aspects. In the absence of the president, the interval vice president assumes presidential duties. The responsibilities of the internal vice president include:
  • To plan and organize officer retreats at the beginning of Fall and Winter quarters.
  • To plan and organize banquets at the end of Fall and Spring quarters.
  • To oversee social events and act as a mentor for the social chairs.
  • To train the secretaries in their responsibilities and provide assistance in correspondence matters.
  • To oversee the historians and the mentorship chair in their duties.
  • To act as a signatory to the Center of Student Programming.

External Vice President

The external vice president is responsible, along with the president, for presenting the Engineering Society to the School of Engineering, other engineering organizations, and to the UCLA student boy as a whole. In particular, the external vice president works closely with the leaders of other engineering student organizations to discuss relevant issues pertaining to the school of engineering. In addition, the external vice president serves as a liaison between the Engineering Society and other student organizations in organizing major events such as Engineering Welcome Day in the fall and Engineering Week in the spring. The duties of the external vice president include:
  • To act as President in the absence of the President and Internal Vice President.
  • To officiate and run all elections held on behalf of the Society.
  • Conduct the EXCOMM Meeting in which all the leaders of each organization must attend.
  • To collaborate with other Engineering Groups and remain updated in upcoming activities.
  • To oversee Corporate Outreach Directors and Publicity Chairs.
  • To act as a signatory to the Center of Student Programming.

Treasurer

The job of the treasurer is to manage the funds of ESUC. The treasurer must balance the expenditures required to support the society's social events as well as engineering-wide events such as Engineering Welcome Day and Engineer's Week. In addition, the treasurer must be proactive in seeking funds from a variety of sources, including USAC, corporate sponsorships, and the School of Engineering. In this, the treasurer works closely with the Directors of Corporate Outreach and the Fundraising Coordinators. The duties of the treasurer include:
  • To collect and disburse funds of the Society as authorized by the Officer Team.
  • To process and keep track of budgets for each event.
  • To file a SOOF funding request every year.
  • To proactively look into other funding opportunities and create budget proposals.
  • To create a list of expenditures at the end of each term.
  • To create and maintain a bimonthly count of money and to log expenditures made.

Secretary

The secretary is in charge of communication among the officers and to the members of ESUC. The duties of the secretary are as following:
  • To take attendance at Officer Meetings and assist in maintaining Officer Accountability.
  • To make sure all officers and members are updated on a regular basis on the events taking place in the society.
  • To compose and send out the Weekly Bruin Engineer emails.

Assistant Secretary

The purpose of the assistant secretary is to help the secretary in any jobs that he/she may need. In addition, the assistant secretary is an ideal position for new officers to learn more about ESUC and how it functions. The specific jobs of the assistant secretary are:
  • To record and distribute the minutes of officer and general meetings through email and the website.

Social Chair

The social chairs of ESUC are responsible to planning and executing all social events. They work closely with the publicity committee and the treasurer to make sure there is funding for the events and that the events are properly advertised. It is important for the social chairs to be outgoing and energetic in planning exciting events for the society. The duties of the social chairs include:
  • Planning and executing all social events.
  • Budgeting for social events with the help of the treasurer.
  • Working with the publicity chair in publicizing events.

Events Chair

The Events Chair is responsible for planning Engineering School-wide events on behalf of ESUC. The Events Chair is primarily responsible for planning Engineering Welcome Day in the Fall Quarter and Engineer's Week in the Spring Quarter. Much of the planning for Engineering Welcome Day takes place during the summer. Thus, the chair for Fall Quarter must be able to perform his/her duties during the summer break as well. The planning for Engineer's Week takes place in Winter Quarter and is a massive endeavor requiring the aid of the entire officer team. The Events Chair must be organized and experienced in event planning at UCLA. The duties of the Events Chair include:
  • Hold Engineering Welcome Day Fall Quarter. Responsible for planning the day and organizing the event so that the incoming students to the School of Engineering get acquainted with the student groups and have an easy transition into engineering at UCLA.
  • In charge of coordinating summer Orientation tabling.
  • Responsible for coordinating Engineer's Week, usually held in Spring Quarter of every year.
  • Responsible for assisting the School of Engineering with Senior Dinner at the end of Spring Quarter.

Corporate Outreach Director

The directors of corporate outreach act as the liaisons between ESUC and professional organizations. He/she is the primary contact for professional organizations interested in working with ESUC to host infosessions. It is important for the corporate outreach directors to be professional at all times in dealing with companies because they represent the society. The duties of the Corporate Outreach Director include:
  • To convey information regarding scholarship, career, and research opportunities to engineering students.
  • To facilitate communication between ESUC and corporate industry.
  • Actively seek out new sponsors.
  • Assist the treasurer and the fundraising chair in sending funding proposals to industry contacts.
  • To organize and host infosessions.

Publicity Chair

The publicity chair of ESUC is responsible for making sure the engineering community is aware of ESUC's events. The duties of the publicity chair include:
  • Creating and posting fliers for all ESUC events.
  • Update the calendar / officer roster in front of SEAS Café.
  • Maintaining sandwich boards and boards outside ESUC.
  • Creating Facebook (or any future equivalent) events and inviting members.

Historian

The role of the historian is to record the on-going history of ESUC as well as compile and maintain past events. At least one historian must be at every event or must delegate another officer or member to photograph the event. The duties of the historian are as following:
  • To actively photograph all ESUC events and maintain a digital collection.
  • To collect past photographs and collect them into a digital archive.
  • Create a physical scrapbook at the end of each term.
  • To track down and organize scrapbooks from ESUC's past.

Technology Chair

The technology chair is meant to act as a liaison between the web developers and system administrators and the rest of the officer board. The tech chair must be able to translate the technical needs of the society into layman's terms for the rest of the officer team, as well as translate the requests of the rest of the officer team to the tasks required of the web developers and/or the system administrators. The duties of the technology chair include:
  • Oversee the web developers and system administrators in their duties.
  • Communicate with the rest of the officer board about the technical needs of the society.

System Administrator

The system administrator is in charge of maintaining and improving the computing facilities in the ESUC lounge as well as troubleshooting any problems that arise from computer failure. The duties of the system administrator may overlap with the duties of the web developer depending on the qualifications of the officer in question. The duties of the system administrator include:
  • Maintain and keep computing facilities at ESUC Lounge up to date.
  • Help members and officers solve computing problems.

Web Developer

The web developer is in charge of maintaining the ESUC website and mailing lists as well as fixing any problems in the online databases. The duties of the web developer may overlap with the system administrator depending on the qualifications of the officer in question. The duties of the web developer include:
  • Create, maintain, and expand site for ESUC members and officers.
  • Develop web application tools and automation techniques for managing and running the ESUC organization.

Newsletter Editor

The newsletter editor is in charge of producing the biannual Bruin Engineer Newsletter. The first edition of the year must come out in time for Engineering Welcome Day, while the second edition must come out in time for Engineer's Week. The duties of the newsletter editor are as follows:
  • During summer and winter quarters, obtain articles from officers and other engineering groups.
  • Compile the articles, design and edit the layout of the Newsletter.

Projects Chair

This officer will bring new ideas and energy into beginning and actualizing fun, interesting projects. In the past, ESUC has done a multitude of activities, ranging from renting out entire buses for football games to holding formal balls for the entire Engineering school. The position of Projects Chair will serve to better the Engineering community and start new traditions.

Fundraising Coordinator

The role of the fundraising coordinator is to work alongside the treasurer in securing funding for the society. The duties of the fundraising coordinator are as follows:
  • Research and write USAC proposals (with the exception of SOOF) with the help of the treasurer.
  • Plan and organize fundraiser events for the society, including food sales and restaurant nights.
